Turkey Day

I love cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I usually try a new dish each year, careful to keep the old reliables such as mashed potatoes and stuffing. I would have a revolt on my hands if I left out the potatoes or giblet gravy.

And, just like searching for a new culinary delight each November, I also try to change up the tablescape, as well. Last year's centerpiece was a driftwood turkey stuffed with tall snowdrop blooms, nestled in reindeer moss.

So, what to do this year. Here are some of the contenders.

I love blue and orange together.

And, outside seating is possible if you live in Florida. Check.

Happy Turkey Day!

Grayt Grounds of Monet Monet

No, I didn't accidentally type 'Monet' twice. Grayt Grounds of Monet Monet is the full name of the newest coffee house in Grayton Beach, Florida. Tucked within a beautiful patch of Old Florida, is an impressive two-story replica of the impressionist painter's home, Giverny. The original owner modeled his own home along County Road 30A to mirror Monet's home. Hence the name Monet Monet. (No clue why he needed to say it twice.)

Complete with Giverny's Main Alley, Japanese bridge, and deep green shutters and doors, the Monet Monet property was later purchased by entrepreneur, Cheri Peebles. Cheri enhanced the gardens and converted the first floor open-concept living area into a coffee house. Guests are welcomed to linger in the large living space or enjoy their beverages while strolling the park-like property.

A beautiful gazebo to enjoy the quiet.

Grayt Coffee House displays local artists' work throughout the property. The oil paintings of Joan Vienot will be featured until November 17.

Cheri Peebles, owner

Cheri also owns Hibiscus, a bed and breakfast located in Grayton Beach, and Grayton Beach Catering. Truly a busy, but very fun lady.

Check out Grayt Grounds' website here. If you're visiting the Grayton Beach area, consider Cheri's guest house, Hibiscus. Click. A great way to visit Old Florida and make it your own.

It's a Grayt life!

Yuletide Barn

It's not my intent to be a magazine critic with this blog, but it just so happens there are some great holiday issues out there. Veranda's Nov/Dec issue features the usual classy homes and gardens we've come to expect: a Connecticut country house, a tailored Los Angeles villa, and an upscale barn in Madison, Georgia.

The horse barn, home to five horses (three of them rescues) converts nicely into a place to enjoy dessert and conversation during the holidays. I last wrote about Dan Belman and Randy Korando's business, Boxwoods Gardens, on August 10, "Quick Trip to Atlanta". It's one of my favorite stops...sure to inspire. Their Madison property, not far from Atlanta, affords them a chance to rest, relax and refuel.

Tartan, antler candlesticks, and yards and yards of balsam help to make the season bright.

Pick up a copy of this month's Veranda or enjoy from your iPad subscription.

Lonny magazine has a treat in store for their iPad subscribers. For a short time only, all back issues are free and available to iOS7 users.

Here's a little peak at the December, 2012 issue.

Starting your own business and need some tips? Alison Schneider's Chelsea storefront, Haven's Kitchen, offers cooking classes, a gourmet foods section using locally grown products, coffee bar, restaurant and an events space. Wonder if she gets her produce from the Tribeca farmer's market?

And from this month's issue...

The beautiful 100-acre Swanson farm (of frozen food fame) in Oakville, Ca is just what you would expect, and more.

Sorry these photos are the size of Kansas. Hope that doesn't affect things if you want to pin them. I don't always win my battle with the 'resize' button.
